Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: What I Tell My Customers

Lab-grown diamonds are the single biggest shift I've seen in this industry, full stop. I spent years on the sales side of one of the world's largest diamond suppliers, and I remember exactly when lab-grown stones went from a curiosity to a mainstream case size on the show floor.

Let's start with the facts: chemically, physically, and optically, a lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. Same carbon crystal structure, same fire, same hardness. The only difference is origin. A natural diamond formed over a billion-plus years deep in the earth; a lab-grown one is grown in a controlled chamber over a matter of weeks.

Where they really diverge is price and value retention. Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 30 to 60 percent less than a comparable natural stone, and that gap has only widened as production has scaled up. Natural diamonds, because supply is genuinely finite, have historically held their value far better on the resale and trade-in market. Lab-grown prices, on the other hand, have continued to drop year over year as more growers enter the market.

So which is "right"? Honestly, there isn't a right answer, only a right answer for you. If you want the biggest, most brilliant stone for your budget and aren't focused on resale, lab-grown is a fantastic choice. If rarity, heritage, and long-term value matter to you, natural is still the standard. I've sold both to happy customers, and I'll always give you the honest trade-offs rather than a sales pitch.
